The first stage today started already at 0:45. As the wind wears off in the evening, I wanted to cycle at night. Weather wise it worked quite well for two hours, but mentally it is a huge challenge to start so early! It just makes a big difference if I cycle into the darkness or know that it’s going to be bright compared to cycling for hours without daylight. The temperatures at night are exhausting too. In this desert here, it gets quite cold during the night. Of course, I’m sweating because of the movement. This mix of hot and cold feels like fever and is just unbearable in combination with my fatigue.
After 50 km I stopped because of these conditions and took a four-hour sleep break. At 8 o’clock we started the next stage. The headwind challenges me constantly, but after fighting against it for hours, there were another 120 km on the bike computer at 3 pm. In the afternoon the wind reached its peak and forced us to take the second break. As night fell, I sat back on the bike and faced the challenging headwind a third time. Another 100 km were the result. A daily mileage of 270 km – it goes uphill again!
You have given me the motivation for this hard day! Today I have received countless messages via social media and private mails, which have given so much positive energy that I can draw incredible power from it. Many, many, many thanks for that! It means so much to me and my whole team to see that support. These messages motivate me to get on the bike again! You are just incredible!
