Day 37

From Guatemala to Honduras

Day 37

From Guatemala to Honduras

I skipped the lunch break today because I did not want to risk to be stuck in front of a border once again. The landscape in Guatemala was beautiful, although, I have to admit, I do not always notice it on the bike. There were still some potholes, but all in all the roads were better than yesterday. The heat is equally tropical and exhausting.

Otherwise, I can report that my team had an interesting start to the day. We stayed at a gas station, which is usually lit for 24 hours and often even guarded by security. During the usual maintenance work on the campervan, like filling up the water and fuel tanks, Kerstin and Christian noticed that the RV had no air in one of the rear double tires. The auto-mechanic skills that we have acquired in the preparations for Ice2Ice paid off once again. At almost 100% humidity and a very tight wheel arch, the two got their share of physical strain. But together, they managed the repair with some of the super practical tools we have at hand.

The entry into Honduras worked out without any problems to our great joy. Kathi’s preparation of all the documents, which we can print out in the Campervan even at the last moment, and Viki’s Spanish skills were once again essential. I took the almost two-hour wait to catch up on my lunch break. Then we went a little bit further down to the coast of Honduras.

I am very happy and grateful to have made the first 10,000 km today without any major incidents, often with more luck than bad luck. Now we head to bed early, so we can start tomorrow very early. We have to make the most of the few bright daytime hours!
