Day 18

Heat in Montana

Day 18

Heat in Montana

The heat here is overwhelming. In order to escape the sun and the tedious side and headwind, we have already made the lunch break at kilometer 150. This time in the bus, because there was no shade.

It was also too hot for the replacement wheels that we have in case mine would break. Kerstin had a little startling moment when it suddenly popped loud in the camper and the coats of the tubeless-ready rim snapped off. During the lunch break, she repaired them while I tried to get myself back on track. My biggest problem right now is my buttocks. On the bright side, in Africa, it was much worse at this time around. Every little break helps!

After a short power nap and Viola’s physiotherapeutic care, the first 1.5 hours after the lunch break went much better. The wind slowed down, the temperatures were much cooler. The landscape is becoming more varied, too. There are more trees and the outcrops of Yellowstone National Park make the ride really interesting. At the roadside, we see more animals again. Quite a lot of horses and cows are turning their heads quite interested when I pass by.

We will spend the night in Billings and tomorrow we’ll pass the 5,000-kilometer mark!
