Day 78

Ice2Ice: of snow and rain

Day 78

Ice2Ice: of snow and rain

Today I cycled constantly through rain and snow. In the morning it was still quite warm and had 6°C. However, with our last crossing of the Andes the temperatures decreased with every meter gain in height. At the top of the pass, rain became snow, paired with icy cold weather. Cycling through rain and snow is never really pleasant, but when the temperature is -1°C, it is really exhausting. It feels like I had changed my clothes 17 times today. The whole team is struggling to get my clothes as dry as possible.

At the pass, I took the time to take a few steps through the snow to get to the summit cross. I was already wet and had to change afterwards anyway. The first meters in the last country of my world record attempt were something special.

The highlight of the day was of course the crossing to Argentina. We have actually mastered the last border to a new country! Once again, as a cyclist, I was able to complete all border formalities fairly quickly. The cars needed a bit longer, but also came through easily.

Anyone who has ever ridden a bike in winter with clothes that are completely wet knows how tough my day’s stage was today. After eight hours, I simply ran out of energy and was frozen to the bones. Therefore we stopped a bit earlier. It is terrible when the hands are freezing from the beginning and the clothes are always wet. Moreover the constant changing of clothes needs a lot of power. I spent some more time on food intake because I tend to have shortcomings. Especially the hydration is very difficult for me in this cold. A lack of thirst in permanent rain does not mean that I need less water in these conditions. My team always reminds me well of eating and drinking. Eating so much food every day is really hard for me, but that is also my duty during Ice2Ice.

Hopefully we will not need to change to another sleeping place today. We park next to a campsite in a pretty rich town full of lodges. The forecast says that we will have snow in the morning and then rain. Let’s see if the cars are covered in snow in the morning.
