Day 32

New day, new team member

After we ended the day yesterday relatively early, we started in the dark today. At the moment, I cannot take the highway trips at night as well as I usually do. By now, I’ve learned that when the knees start to shake and the gut feeling clearly says that things are not going to turn out just fine, I should not go ahead at all costs.

It was very hilly all day long. We have done almost 340 km and something over 3000 meters in altitude. On one of these climbs, I met another racing cyclist and of course we chatted straight away. A few miles later, he was home and invited us for a drink and snack right away. As luck would have it, he is unbelievably well connected and will organize escort services for the upcoming night drives. If that works, it would be a such a relief!
From a weather perspective, it was unstable today. We got into two rain showers, but I’ll have to get used to that for the rest of the way south.

Today we drove for the first time on a high line. These are highways that are situated above cities. This is common in some countries and we tested them by mistake today. However, they have the big disadvantage that they have only very sporadic exits. We had to drive longer than expected.

And now, the news you are waiting for since the headline: We have a new team member! Christian Wohlmutter was so incredibly spontaneous and ready to accompany us. He left Vienna immediately for Mexico City and took a bus to meet us further north. Unfortunately, his bus unloaded him at a different location than planned. He made a quick decision and hiked 12 km on the motorway with all his luggage to head towards our direction. 20 minutes before the agreed meeting place, he actually arrived on time! This is how you realize that he is also an athlete, he does not mind the exercise at all and even completed his training session for today.

I am very curious what kind of adventure we will have tomorrow!
